Why Online Business Advice Is Making You Feel Behind (And What to Do Instead)

PODCAST: Season 7, Episode 27

This one’s a bit of a rant. A necessary one.

After nearly two decades running my own businesses, I’m calling out the noise that’s quietly keeping talented, driven business owners stuck, spinning, and comparing themselves to everyone else’s highlight reel. Not to be contrarian – but because someone needs to say it.

“Just Show Up More” Is Not a Business Strategy

If your offer isn’t clear and your ideal client isn’t nailed down, posting every single day is just exhausting busy work. Content comes after clarity – always. Showing up is not a strategy. Figure out what you’re selling and who you’re selling to first.

Why Screenshotted Cash Months Are Misleading You

Revenue peaks don’t make someone an expert. They make them good at marketing. Measuring your track record against someone else’s best ever month is one of the most damaging things you can do in business. A quiet month doesn’t mean you’re failing. Your experience, your judgment, your track record – none of that resets when Stripe goes back to zero.

The Myth of the Secret Formula

The people you admire aren’t gatekeeping anything. They’ve just done the unglamorous work consistently, before there was an audience. There’s no secret source. When you convince yourself there is, you end up in a spiral of shiny object chasing that keeps you busy and going nowhere.

Doing Everything Yourself Isn’t High Standards – It’s Fear

This one’s personal. The belief that you have to be across everything in your business isn’t protecting your quality – it’s protecting your comfort zone. Handing things over isn’t the risk. Doing everything yourself is. Control that comes from fear and control that comes from high standards look identical on the surface. But they need completely different responses.

The 5-Question Audit

No judgement – just awareness.

  1. Are you creating content before you have real clarity on your offer and ideal client?
  2. What did you last compare your numbers to – and what did that do to your decisions?
  3. Are you busy because it’s necessary, or because it feels safer than being still?
  4. What are you doing in your business that’s actually fear dressed up in a productivity outfit?
  5. If you stripped out all the noise – no feed, no screenshots, no comparisons – what would you focus on this week?
