What Happens When A Slightly Unhinged Idea Scribbled In A Notebook Turns Into An Actual Business Event For 80 Women?

PODCAST: Season 7, Episode 44

If you’ve sat through one more talk about 100K months, multi-seven-figure funnels and manifesting your way to success and quietly thought “what am I actually listening to?”, this one’s for you. In this behind-the-scenes episode, I’m taking you inside the very early days of The Rebellion, the in-person women in business event I’m creating for around 80 women who are done being told what success should look like.

I’m not anti any of those things. If you want 100K months, brilliant. I’m anti being told what I should want, and whether I’m successful if I want it or not.

So I started wondering what a different kind of business event could look like. Conversations instead of a parade of speakers telling you how successful they are. Panels where people are allowed to disagree. Breathwork, laughter, swearing and different kinds of ambition in one room. And 80 women leaving clear about what they actually want, not desperately thinking they should want more.

How I’m Planning a Women in Business Event From Scratch

In this episode, I share:

  • How my book launch in July, and the messages that followed, led to the idea
  • Why I don’t do five-year plans, and why you don’t have to either
  • The scrappy notebook page from a mastermind day where I wrote “The Rebellion” and then, for no obvious reason, “80”
  • What happened when I read that page out to the room
  • How a session with my astrologer about community planted a seed I almost ignored
  • Why around 40 people joined the waitlist before there was a date or a venue
  • What I’ve sorted so far: venue, date, some speakers and a vision
  • The imposter syndrome that showed up the moment I decided on 80 women
  • Why giving myself space to think is the reason any of this exists

Who Decides What Success in Business Looks Like?

I’ve got a little antenna that goes up at certain events. Here we go: 100K months, seven figures, young gurus, funnels. And honestly, I find it boring. I’m all for people being successful at any age, but being told how to live by someone in their twenties makes me want to say “you’ve got a whole life to live, love.”

Writing The Rebellious Leader was my way of calling out the hard truths in the coaching and online business world. The Rebellion is the next step: a room where you get to decide what success means for you.

What to Do When Imposter Syndrome Shows Up After You Set a Big Goal

Here’s the bit I’m still working through. I‘ve decided there should be 80 women in the room, and I’m having massive imposter syndrome about it. Is 80 the room I genuinely want, or a number that sounds like a proper successful event?

Holding the space isn’t what worries me. Around 60 people came to my book launch, and the biggest event I’ve run before was about 40. What I need to get my head around is whether I can sell 80 to 100 tickets. That’s the work I’m doing in the background, and I might come back with a part two on how it’s going.

The Rebellious Leader Audit

  1. How much of your ambition is actually yours, and how much did you pick up from the people around you?
  2. When did a useful target in your business turn into proof that you’re successful?
  3. Can you want something enormous without needing it to validate you?
  4. If you reached half of your biggest goal, would you let yourself call it a success?
  5. What idea keeps showing up for you that you haven’t given yourself the space to explore?

Your Rebellious Decision

Take your biggest goal for the next year and ask: is this the number I want, or the number I think will prove I’ve made it? Then write down what success looks like if nobody’s watching.
